New research from the Halifax has revealed that children in Harpenden have the highest savings in the country, with an average of £3,046 compared to the national average of just £1,296.
Greater London dominates the top 10 towns for children’s savings, with eight of the top 10 spots located in the capital city.
Only top-placed Harpenden and Altrincham (£2,044) break the capital’s dominance of the savings table.
The gender gap is virtually non-existent, with boys just edging it at £1,295 compared to £1,291 for girls.
Nitesh Patel, savings economist at Halifax, stated that it was important for children to form saving habits early on as it would help prepare them for financial decisions later in life.
In May of this year the Scottish Widows Priorities of Life Index revealed that 17m people (35% of adults) were neglecting their savings, highlighting the importance of developing the saving habit.
