Joseph A. Sullivan has been appointed by Legg Mason to the post of chief administrative officer.

He leaves behind Stifel Nicolaus, where he was a director and responsible for fixed income capital markets business, to rejoin Legg Mason.

Sullivan joined Stifel Nicolaus three years ago at the time it acquired the capital markets business of Legg Mason, having spent 12 years with what was then Legg Mason Walker Wood.

At the start of his 29 year career, he held senior roles with Dain Bosworth and Piper Jaffrey.

Sullivan will assume responsibility for all daily operational functions, including areas such as human resources, risk management and technology.

He will report directly to Mark R. Fetting, Legg Mason’s chief executive officer and president.

Fetting has welcomed Sullivan’s return, praising him as an accomplished and talented leader.
