Donald Kaberuka, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), announced in Tunis that the AfDB is to bolster its commitment to fighting food shortages with an extra $1bn in funding.
The extra money is to be spent on agricultural projects across Africa.
Kaberuka has also called upon countries that produce and export cereals not to put a ban on exports as a response to the world food crisis.
Such a move, he has said, would endanger the lives of 150m Africans in a dozen nations, disproportionately affecting older people and the sick.
