Last month Duncan Lawrie, part of the Camellia Plc group of companies, opened a representative office in Kolkata, providing private clients resident in India with banking and investment management services.
Duncan Lawrie has historical links with Kolkata dating from the 19th century when a pair of Scotsmen (Walter Duncan and Alexander Lawrie) journeyed to the region and created merchanting houses which traded with the UK.
Duncan Lawrie will operate from Camellia Plc’s tea plantation head office in Kolkata.
Chairman Peter Field has stated that India is an obvious choice for a distribution centre due to its consecutive years of strong growth and a progressive approach to investment opportunities.
Field went on to state that Kolkata’s wealth was due to the hard work and ingenuity of its people, a further reason for the firm to establish an office in the area.
