by Richard Kilner

Story link: Santander: Bank of the Year in Latin America

Santander has been named Bank of the Year in Latin America, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Uruguay by The Banker Magazine.

In particular, the magazine singled out Santander’s management skills and wise approach to risk policies.

Brian Caplen, editor of The Banker, described the success of Santander as being largely due to evading the collateral damage from the subprime mortgage crisis coupled with an ability to maintain profits whilst also acquiring other firms such as ABN Amro’s business in Latin America.

The awards given by The Banker are not the first that Santander have achieved, with the bank also winning the Best Bank in the World accolade from Euromoney Magazine.

In addition to this, Euromoney Magazine also considered Santander to be the Best Regional Bank in Latin America, Best Bank in the UK (due to subsidiary Abbey), Spain, Portugal, Chile and Argentina.
